Mrs. M. D. Hanft, a lifelong resident of this community, passed away at her home on South Hill at two o'clock this Thursday morning, October 13, 1921, following an illness of more than two months. Catherine Cutkomp was born in Muscatine county, Iowa, September 30, 1856 and came with her parents at an early age to this county, moving with them on a farm south east of Columbus City. December 25, 1873 she was united in marriage to Milton D. Hanft and they soon afterwards went to housekeeping on a farm. Later they purchased a home of their own where they resided until 1907 when they moved to this city. In the fall of 1877 she was converted and with her husband united with the United Brethren church at Columbus City. October 12, 1912, the husband was called in death and since then she continued to maintain her home.

She was a kind neighbor, a devoted mother. She is survived by four sons, S. Louis Hanft, of East Concord, New York, Todd M. Hanft, of Columbus City and John H. and Hale H. Hanft who live on the home farm and two daughters, Mrs. W. P. Edmondson and Mrs. B. H. Shearer, both of this community, One daughter, Mrs. Edward Pretz, preceded her in death, August 31, 1914. She is also survived by three sisters, Mrs. Jane Bretz, Mrs. B. F. Cutkomp and Mrs. Ida Stark, of Columbus City and two brothers, Luis and Henry Cutkomp, of near this city. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two thirty o'clock at the United Brethren church at Columbus City conducted by Rev. A. E. Schwimley assisted by Rev. S. E. Delzell and Rev. W. H. Dillon. interment in the Columbus City cemetery.
