Page 1Frank Colton, Louisa County's oldest business man died at Columbus City, Friday evening, September 16. The end came suddenly and peacefully while he was busy with the regular duties of his store. Francis Colton was a son of Patrick and Hannah Colton, who were among the earliest settler in Iowa. He was born in Louisa County October 9, 1842. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. R. A. Johnston of Columbus City and Mrs. Ivanhoe Whitted of Des Moines, four granddaughters, and one great grandson; also two brothers, John and Thomas Colton of this county.
Funeral services were held Monday of this week, conducted at the M. E. church by Rev. Ward and Rev. Jamison, at the grave by the Masonic order, of which the deceased had been a member for fifty-seven years. His nephews were pall bearers.
Mr. Colton was the senior member of the firm Colton & Garner of Columbus City, in point of service the oldest firm in Louisa County, Mr. Garner it will be recalled, was buried only a few weeks ago. Born and developed in a period and under conditions that made strong men. Mr. Colton was a typical Iowa product. He was born in a log cabin and his boyhood included the hardships and privations characteristic of the times. His schooling was of the most meager sort. At the age of sixteen he became a clerk in a general store. Then came the War of '61-'65. Tho but nineteen years old he enlisted in the regular U. S. Army. He was married to Eleanore S. Garner in 1867.
