James Hayes Jones was the fifth child and third son of Barton and Martha Jones. His birthplace was the homestead about a half mile northeast of Spring Run church. The date of his birth was November 26th, 1860. Hayes grew to maturity on the farm home of his parents. He was faithful in his attendance in school and upon the church services. December 28th, 1881 he was united in marriage with Sophronia Alice Mickey. They were the parents of seven children, Clyde E.; Zella M.; Joseph B.; Hazel Pearl, now Mrs. Harry Fletcher; Josephine who died when one and half years old; Dewy B.; and Ross who lived only ten days. On September 9th, 1910 this noble mother suffer a stroke of paralysis in the morning and passed away in the evening.

On December 16, 1915, Mr. Jones and Miss Jennie M. Manly, of Mechanicsville, Iowa, were married in the While Oak U. E. church near her parental home. Since early January Mr. Jones was unable most of the time to attend church services. For the last two months he has suffered with anemia. The death messenger called him from this life at five o'clock Thursday afternoon July 7th. His age was sixty years, seven months and eleven days.

His father preceded him in death in 1899, his mother in 1905, his sister, Mrs. Maria Buffington, in 1909, and infant grandson Leslie Arthur Jones and his brother, Rev. L.A. Jones in 1918, and his sister, Mary Jones in 1920. Two brothers, D. W. Jones of Gladwin and Marshall E. Jones of Wilton, Iowa, survive him. These and his wife, three sons, two daughter, seven granddaughters and two grandsons and many other relatives will long cherish his memory.

In his young manhood he committed his ways unto the Lord and lived the life of a faithful servant of the master he loved. The funeral was held in the Spring Run church at 2:30 p. m. Saturday afternoon July 9th and was conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. G. Roths. Mr. Jones was laid away in the family lot by the wife of his younger years in the Spring Run cemetery.
