James H. Duncan, father of H. L. Duncan, of this city, passed away at the home of his son in Burlington, Wednesday morning, May 4th at seven o'clock following a brief illness. The remains will be brought to this city Friday afternoon and taken to the United Presbyterian church at Columbus City where funeral services will be held at three o'clock with interment in the Columbus City cemetery. James H. Duncan, Civil war veteran and proprietor of the Dad's Place restaurant on South Main street, for a number of years, died at the home of his son O. F. Duncan, 204 South Tenth street, Wednesday morning.

As soon as he was old enough to enlist in 1862, he joined Company F. of the twenty-fifth Iowa Infantry. His company was mobilized at Mt. Pleasant and went down the Mississippi River into Missouri where he received his first taste of battle in a minor engagement. He went thru the whole war, taking part in several battles. He mustered out in 1865.

He was born in Louisa county on December 3, 1843 and married Miss Isabelle Johnson on September 4, 1866. His wife died August 1894. Eighteen years ago Mr. Duncan came to Burlington and opened a restaurant. He leaves three sons, O. F. and R. H. Duncan, of Burlington and H. L. Duncan of Columbus Junction and one brother, W. H. Duncan of Allentown, Pa. He is also survived by seven grandchildren. The funeral will be held from the Unterkircher funeral home Friday morning and the body will be taken to Columbus City for burial.
