N. W. McKay, a veteran of the Civil war, and a prominent man of Louisa county, passed away at his home Thursday morning at two o'clock, after weeks of intense suffering. Norval Willoughby McKay, son of James and Rebecca (Hicklin) McKay was born in Clark county, Ill., May 11, 1838. In 1842 he came with his parents to Louisa county, locating in Columbus City township, where the father was one of the leading men. In 1850 James McKay started on a visit to California but was taken sick and died at Chimney Rock, that state. Mrs. McKay died in Wapello several years later.

On January 1, 1864, Mr. McKay enlisted as a private in Co. I, 6th Iowa Inf., and served until July 2, 1865, when he was discharged at Louisville, Ky, by reason of a gunshot wound. In 1869 he was chosen as recorder of Louisa county, serving from 1869 to 1876, then again from 1881 to 1884, In 1888 he was elected treasurer of the county, serving in that capacity until 1895. He was retained as deputy in the various offices until his health began to fail.

On May 8, 1866, Mr. McKay was united in marriage to Marietta Taylor, who died Aug. 29, 1877. To this union was born three daughters Maud, who died many years ago; Servilla, wife of John Hayes, of Toolesboro, Della, wife of John Stewart, of Brighton, Colo. On November 4, 1880, he was again married to Helen Horn, who survives and has been confined to her bed for more than a year with paralysis. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Louie Estella, wife of Henry A. Miller, residing near Wapello. He is also survived by one brother, Daniel McKay of Wapello and one sister, Mrs. J. M. Davis, of Chillicothe, Mo. Deceased was a member of A. M. Taylor Post, G.A.R., serving as adjutant for years and also a member of the I. O. O. F.
