George W. Mellinger, one of the oldest residents of Oakville, passed away at his residence in that city Sunday evening, March 18, 1917, aged 88 years, 11 months and 20 days. Mr. Mellinger lived in Oakville the past sixty-seven years and was one of the most active men in upbuilding of the community. He was born in Baden, Germany, March 28, 1828 and came to America at the age of 22 years, settling in 1858 in Eliot township in this county. He was married to Germany to Miss Sophia Herr and to them were born twelve children: Barbara, wife of John Kramar, of Oakville; Elizabeth, wife of R. Kinder, of Montana; Henry, a resident of Jefferson township; Frank and John, of Oakville; Michael, of Eliot township; George E., of Wapello township, who with his wife survives his death. Margaret, Dora, Rosie, Anna, Emma and Fred receded him in death. He is also survived by thirty-three grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. Mr. Mellinger was a life long member of the Roman Catholic church and died in that faith. During his lifetime he has served as township trustee and school director. The funeral services were held from the residence Tuesday, March 20, at 1 o'clock p. m. conducted by Rev. Father Shaney of Davenport, Iowa. Interment was made in the Creighton cemetery.
