George McCleary, one of the oldest pioneers of Louisa county, who was born in this county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. E. Edmondson, in Concord township, Thursday, March 15, 1917. George W. McCleary was born near Grandview, March 19, 1842 and was 74 years, 11 months and 26 days old at the time of his death. April 22, 1861, he was united in marriage to Nancy A. Simpkins and to them thirteen children were born, two of whom preceded him in death. They made their home on the McCleary farm near Grandview until 1884 when they moved to Kansas. Later they went to Oklahoma where they made their home until the death of Mrs. McCleary, December 4, 1914. Since then Mr. McCleary has made his home with his children at the time of his death was living at the home of his daughter. He had been in failing health for some time but for a few days prior to his death had been feeling better than for several weeks. Monday preceding his death, he was stricken with paralysis and rapidly grew weaker until death summoned him home.

Eleven children, 44 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren survive him. He was the last of his father's family. He was well known and respected in the communities in which he has made his home and took an active part in the early development of this county. The surviving children are: Mrs. M. E. Edmondson, of Columbus Junction; Sam, of Muscatine; Mrs. Helen Classin, of LaEygne, Kansas; Mrs. Victoria Carpenter, of Fontana, Kansas; John and Grover, of Joplin, Missouri; Mrs. Bertha Martin, Mrs. Pearl Skye and Jefferson McCleary, of Miami, Oklahoma; Mrs. Anna Holt, of Strang, Oklahoma; Mrs. Lulu Davis, of Plainview, Texas. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at ten o'clock at the home of his daughter conducted by Rev. E. C. Brooks. Interment in the cemetery at Grandview.
