Stephen Van Cott, died early Friday morning, December 22, 1916, at his home west of town after a brief illness. He was born in Hempstead village, New York, July 22, 1847. He came west at the age of 16 settled in western Iowa. In 1881 he was married to Mrs. Sirrepta Waddell and them two sons were born, Charles and Jacob. The latter son and the wife preceded the husband and father in death. In latter years he was married again and is survived by his wife and three step daughters, Mrs. Della Wainwright and Mrs. Myrtle Wasson, or Nodaway, Iowa and Mrs. Anna Carr, of Kansas City. Mr. Van Cott was converted and united with the Christian church in early manhood. In his younger days he attended law school at Iowa City and was admitted to the bar in Montgomery county and practiced in Iowa and Missouri. He also served as deputy sheriff of Montgomery county. The funeral service was conducted from the Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon by Rev. W. E. Ruston. Interment in the Tennessee cemetery.
