Elvira Miller DeFord was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, December 5, 1829 and died at the home of her son, Wm. DeFord of Columbus Junction, November 10, 1916, aged eighty six years, eleven months and five days. When a young girl she moved with her parents to Danville, Illinois, where they lived for several years. They moved from there to Monroe, Wisconsin, where she was married in 1847 to Joseph DeFord who preceded her in death April 20, 1879. In 1849 they came to Iowa making their home at West Union until after her husband's death. Since then she has made her home most of the time with her son, William, of Columbus Junction. About 1862 she joined the United Brethern church and was a faithful member until her death. She leaves to mourn her loss three sons, William of Columbus Junction, W. L. and H. C. of Columbus City and one daughter, Margaret Young of Oelwein, her youngest son, Davis having preceded her in death, August 5, 1903. The funeral services was held at two o'clock Sunday afternoon at the home of her son, William. Rev. R. J. Allred, pastor of the United Brethern church at Columbus City officiating. Interment was made in the Columbus City cemetery.
