Ernest Winter, a well know resident of Wapello and at an early day one of the wealthiest and most prominent of local citizens, passed away at his home there at the age of 85 years Friday, last Sunday having been his eighty-fifth birthday. Mr. Winter came to Wapello at an early day and as the proprietor of the woolen mills there rose to a position of affluence and prominence. He is survive by his wife and by four children, Edward Winter of Wapello, Mrs. George Andress of Denver, Colo, Norman Winter of Des Moines and Miss Vinnie Winter, deputy county auditor of Louisa county. Lew Winter, a half brother and Mrs. Herman Otto, a half sister both of Wapello, also survive him. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the German Methodist Episcopal church in which he was a prominent worker for more than sixty years.
