John Humiston, a well known resident of Columbus Junction and a veteran of the Civil war, died at his home in this city, Friday afternoon at four-thirty o'clock, April 28, 1916. He had been seriously ill for several months and been an invalid the greater part of ten years. John Humiston was born at Wallingford, Connecticut, March 25, 1839. His parents were Charles and Lucy (Bronson) Humiston. Mr. Humiston came to Iowa when a child and settled with his parents on a farm 1 1/2 miles east of Cairo. When the Civil war broke out he enlisted in Co. K. First Missouri Engineer's regiment and served for three years being honorably discharged at the expiration of his term of enlistment at Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Returning then to Louisa county he was united in marriage, January 1, 1866, to Miss Sarah Marshall, of Cairo. Mr. and Mrs Humiston lived on a farm near Cairo until 1891 when they moved to Cairo where they lived for three years. They then moved to Columbus Junction and have resided in this city the past twenty-two years. He is survived by his wife and five children as follows. Charles Humiston, of Cairo; Lewis A. Humiston, at home; Mrs. Emma E. VanHorn of near Cairo; Mrs. Ollis D. Helmich of near Columbus Junction and Mrs. Edna Grandy, of Davenport. A daughter, Bessie M. preceded him in death fifteen years ago. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and one great grandchild and by one half sister, Mrs. Sarah Higgins, of California and one half brother, George Forbes of Chicago. A short funeral service was held at the home Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock after which the remains were taken to the Church of God at Cairo where the funeral sermon was delivered at 2:30 by Rev. R. J. Allred. Interment in the Fulton cemetery.
