Word was received here Monday of the death, February 28, 1916, of C. M. Fulton, at the home of his son, Dr. Chester Fulton, at Springfield, Missouri. Charles Monroe Fulton was born at Shelby, Ohio, August 26, 1836. His parents were Hugh and Marie Altheir (Webb) Fulton. He came with his parents to Louisa county in 1854 and located with them on a farm in Marshall township. Later they moved to Henry county where the mother died in 1866. His father died at Fairfield in 1883. Charles at the age of twenty-one went to New York City where he clerked in some of the biggest stores in that city.

Later he returned to this county and engaged in farming and April 19, 1860, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna E. Hummiston, who died a number of years later. In 1973 Mr. Fulton came to Columbus Junction and engaged in the mercantile business which he carried on until 1878. In April, 1874 he was appointed postmaster of this city and retained that office for twelve years. He then entered into the insurance and loan business in company with J. J. Russell an later continued this business himself about four years ago he sold out his insurance business to J. Fred Moore and went to Missouri to make his home with his son.

Mr. Fulton served as justice of the peace, as city councilman and as mayor of Columbus junction for many years. In 1876 he was chosen a member of the Board of Trustees of the Eastern Iowa Normal school. He is survived by two sons, Dr. C. E. Fulton, of Springfield, Missouri and Ed, of Kansas City and two daughters, Mrs. Allie Morse, of Kansas City and Mrs. Eva Shaw, of Oklahoma. He is also survived by a brother, H. H. Fulton of Fairfield. The remains were brought to this city Wednesday evening and taken to the undertaking parlors of R. H. Malin. this morning the body was taken to the home of E. P. Shellabarger where funeral services were conducted today at 11 o'clock under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias lodge. Attorney F. M. Molsberry delivered the eulogy. Interment in the Columbus City cemetery.
