John W. Shellabarger, a well known and highly esteemed resident of Letts and Muscatine county, died at his home in Letts at 4:15 Wednesday afternoon, February 17, 1916. Death was due to the ills attendant upon old age. John Shellabarger was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, July 25, 1832. At the age of fourteen he came with his parents to Iowa settling on a farm with them in Cedar township, Muscatine county, in 1846. Here he resided until 1901 when he retired to Letts where he has since resided. He is survived by his wife and nine children, all of whom with the exception of one daughter were with him in the last illness to administer to his aid and comfort. The children are: Katherine Isabel Pace, Muscatine, Elizabeth Hidlebaugh, Redverse, Canada; Emma Ellis, Minneapolis, Minnesota; Clara Elder, Nichols, William A. Shellabarger Muscatine, Martin L. Shellabarger, Letts; Frances A. Ellison, Letts; Walter L. Shellabarger, Letts; Jetta Turkington, Columbus Junction. The funeral was held from the United Brethren church at Letts Friday afternoon at 1:30 conducted by Rev. J. W. Boyd, assisted by Rev. David Phillips. Interment in the cemetery at Letts.
