Mrs. Jane Brookins, a well known resident of Columbus Junction for many years, died at her home on South Hill, Friday afternoon January 14, after an illness of several weeks. Jane Clemmons was born at Moriah, New York, January 5, 1837. She was married to Harrison VanHorn, March 27, 1861, who died a few years later. One son, W. H. VanHorn, was born to them and survives to mourn her death. His home is at Moaps, Nevada and he was present Tuesday at the funeral service. June 24, 1866, she was married to Alford Brookins and in 1873 they came to Louisa county, where she has made her home most of the time since. To them were born three children, Herman, of Salem, Oregon, Frank of Mankato, Kansas, who with his wife was also present at the funeral and one daughter, Adella, who died in 1886. Mr. Brookins died many years ago. She is also survived by one brother, Elbert Clemmons, of Muscatine and fifteen grandchildren. Mrs. Brookins united with the Methodist Episcopal church in this city, May 12, 1907 and was a devoted, sincere, Christian woman. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 conducted by Rev. E. C. Brooks. Interment in the Columbus City cemetery.
