John J. Davies, son of John H. and Anna Davies was born in Ty Newydd Melin Meredin, Montgomeryshire, Wales, August 9, 1843 and died at his home near Cotter, Iowa, August 9, 1915, about 5:15 a. m. on his 72nd birthday. He emigrated to America with his parents in 1861. The family purchased and located on a farm in Louisa county, continuing to reside there throughout the remainder of their lives. Our departed brother was the last surviving member of his family, all his brothers and sisters having preceded him in death. As a companion and helpmate on the journey of life Mr. Davies chose Miss Dorothy Evans, in 1873, who was likewise a native of Wales and by whom he had five children, who are now left mourning his death, namely: John Morris at home, Mrs. John Thomas residing south of Cotter, ? residing near Cotter, Walter near Cotter and Price, also at home. The wife and mother was called to her final rest in March, 1880. He is also survived by six grandchildren whom he loved dearly.

Throughout his active business career he was successfully identified with farming and stock raising interest in Louisa county. Our departed brother, while prospering with the temporal affairs of life did not neglect his character and soul. He was faithful to the God of his fathers, identifying himself with the church of Jesus Christ from his youth and he continued faithful to the end. For many years Mr. Davies was a faithful member of Salem church, Long Creek. Since removing to Cotter in 1885 he identified himself with the interests of Bethel church and was elected a deacon a few years ago. Friends, neighbors and relatives in large numbers attended the funeral services Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 10. The services at the home, Bethel church and Zion cemetery were in charge of Rev. Taliesin Richards, Cotter, Iowa.
