D. D. Davis was born in South Wales in 1842 and died March 4, 1915. When nine years of age he came to New York. In the winter of 1861 while yet attending district school he enlisted in the 11th New York Independent Battery Light Artillery and served three years. He was captured just a few days after he had began active service but was exchanged. He fought through the battle of Gettysburg. He was with his Battery in the thick of the fight even to the scene of Pickett's charge. He was also in many other battles during his long service with the Army of the Potomac. His neighbors enjoyed hearing him recite the battle scene through which he had passed and the vivid word pictures he gave of the battle ground of Gettysburg after the victory. It was one of the most enjoyable events of his life to be able to attend the 50th anniversary of that great battle and view the ground where he had fought in behalf of his county.

Mr. Davis was married in 1899 to Miss Jame Jones of New York and moved to Iowa in 1868 and settled on the farm in Columbus City township which he later purchased. Six children were born to this union, Mrs. Mary May Williams, wife of John Williams with whom he had lived for the last twelve years; Mr. D. E. Davis who also purchased and now resides on a part of the original farm; Mrs. Rachel Morgan, wife of John Morgan, who lives on the Great White Way near Columbus City and Thomas who lives on a farm near Green, Iowa. and Miss Margaret and Mrs Thomas Thomas deceased. There are also fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. A large number of his friends and neighbors attended the funeral which was conducted by his pastor, Rev. T. P Jenkins, assisted by Rev. T. Richards of Cotter and Rev. Lloyd Williams of Oskaloosa. He was a successful farmer and took an active part in school and politics. He joined the Welsh Congregational church when thirteen years of age and was an active member during the rest of his life. He served as deacon for more than thirty years.
