William Ashby Buchanan, son of James M. and Elizabeth Buchanan, was born February 28, 1866 in Rockbridge county, Virginia. He was the eldest of seven children, four of whom preceded him in death, while Harry T., of Columbus City and Madie E. of San Francisco, California, remain to mourn the loss of a kind and loving brother. Coming with his parents from the southland in his early boyhood they settled on a farm near Columbus City and some two years later moved to Louisa Center which remained their home until the death of his father, March 12, 1889, when William and Harry took up the support of the family which lasted only two short years when death again came and took from them their mother February 2, 1891.

After the breaking up of the parental home William traveled quite extensively in various lines of employment, making his headquarters at the home of his aunt, Miss Lydia Davis, who has ever been a true mother to the motherless and at whose home deceased passed away August 8, 1914. Being possessed of a literary turn of mind he was a great reader of political, current and historical events. Naturally reverent and self respecting, in young manhood he was a regular attendant at church and Sabbath school and upon the profession of faith was baptized and received into the church under the pastorate of Rev. Gregory. Funeral services were held at the Louisa Center Baptist church Monday at 11 o'clock, conducted by Rev. T. M. Balcoff of Columbus Junction. Interment in the Long Creek cemetery.
