George W. Murdock, a former well known resident of this city, who moved to Cedar Rapids about seven years ago, died at the home of his son in that city, June, 19, 1914. He was born at the Mt. Pleasant, O., February 11, 1838 and was educated in the public schools of that place. In April, 1861 at the first call for troops by President Lincoln he enlisted and served for four months. After being mustered out and going home for a brief furlough he re-enlisted in Co. G. Fifteenth Ohio and served until the close of the war. Procuring a furlough, he came west to Mt. Pleasant, Ia., and on March 3, 1864, he was united in marriage to Miss Louisa Griffith. He at once went back to the army until he was mustered out and secured an honorable discharge. Returned to Mt. Pleasant, where he resided for several years then removed to Burlington, Ia., where he spent several years as superintendent of the Murray Iron Works. In the spring of 1873 he came to Columbus Junction forming a partnership in the hardware business with his brother-in-law, O. F. Griffith. After the death of his wife he moved to Cedar Rapids to be with his children. He is survived by a daughter, Ina and a son, Allen Ross. Brief funeral services were held at his late home by the pastor, Rev. E. J. Lockwood, The remains were then taken to Columbus Junction where services were held Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian church conducted by Rev. T. M. Balcoff. interment in the Columbus City cemetery.
