Leander Harvey Blake a veteran of the Civil war passed away at the Soldiers Home at Marshalltown, Iowa, March 19, 1914. He enlisted in the 8th Regiment Co., K, Iowa Infantry, at Davenport, April 20, 1863 and served three years and enlisted again and served until April 20, 1866 when he was honorably discharged at Selina, Alabama. For meritorious service he was appointed corporal in his company. He was captured in one of his regiment's battles and had a taste of life in a Confederate prison. He was buried near Conesville, Iowa, Sunday March 25, when he was given recognition of a soldier.

The Blake family came to Iowa in 1840 from LPorte, Indiana, when Leander was 6 months old and settled near Conesville where practically his whole life was spent. He was married to Miss Celesta Stoddard, December 31, 1866 with whom he lived for more than 47 years. They had one son who died at the age of 11 years. Mr. Blake was born April 10, 1840 and at the time of his demise was 73 years, 11 months and 9 days. There remains to mourn his departure his wife, one brother, Freeina A Blake of Hasper City, Kansas; one sister, Mrs. Martha McConahay of Cairo. The burial service was from the Reformed church at Conesville, C. E. Ewing, pastor officiating.
