Benjamin Van Dyke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Webster Van Dyke, was drowned Saturday afternoon at 12:45 in the Iowa River near Toolesboro. He was returning from Davenport in a gasoline launch with a party of four cousins and when near Toolesboro he attempted to cross the channel of the river to reach a small island, where the launch had been moored, when he was caught by the strong under current and drowned before any assistance could be rendered. Efforts to recover the body were unavailing until about six o'clock Monday evening. The body was brought to this city Tuesday morning and interred in the Fredonia cemetery, a short service being conducted at the grave by Rev. A. W. McBlain. A special memorial service will be held in his memory at the Fredonia church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Benjamin Harrison Van Dyke was born at Fredonia, May 1, 1890 and at the time of his death he was 23 years, 2 months and 8 days old. He is survived by his parents, two brothers, Scott and Jerry of near Bard; and two sisters, Mrs Summer Kulp of Fredonia and Carrie, at home. Another brother, Herbert, was drowned August 27, 1902, near Fredonia.
