Mrs. D. W. Cross. Harriet Irene Walker, was born near the city of Rising Sun, Indiana, March 1, 1849 and died at her home in Fredonia June 3, 1913, age 73 years, 3 months and 3 days. She came to Iowa with her parents when a young woman and in 1864, she with others crossed the plains by team going to California where she was married to Thos. McEackern, about the year 1868. To this union one child, a daughter was born, but passed away at the age of 7 years. After the death of her husband two years later, she moved back to Iowa. She was then married to David W. Cross, the widower of her deceased sister in 1883.

She proved herself a faithful wife and a loving mother to his six motherless children, who with her aged husband are left to mourn her death. Besides the large circle of friends who will miss her, are her husband and the six children spoken of, who are: Mrs. J. W. Moffit of Muscatine, Mrs. H. M. Shellabarger of Washington, Mrs. C. M. Powers of Fredonia, Mrs. C. B. Clark of Columbus Junction, Thomas Cross of Fredonia and Almond Cross of Columbus Junction. Her illness was very brief, only one week. The funeral was held from the Methodist church in Fredonia, Thursday morning, June 5th, conducted by J. R. Hammond. Interment in the Indian Creek cemetery.
