Mrs. Jane A. Owens, a pioneer and highly esteemed resident of Louisa county, died at the home of her son, R. E. Owens, near Columbus City, Wednesday, May 7, after a brief illness of less than two weeks. Jane A. Williams was born in Wales, March 20, 1826 and at the time of her death she was 87 years, 1 month and 17 days of age. Her father was a minister, Rev. Samuel Williams, and at the age of 14 she came with her parents to America and located with them at LeRayesville in Bradford county, Pennsylvania. In June 1850 she was united in marriage to John Owens and seven years later they came west crossing the Mississippi at Muscatine in the spring of 1857. There were no railroads in those days and Louisa county was not the same land of beautiful homes that it is today. That fall they moved onto the farm on which both remained until death summoned each. The husband preceded her in death sixteen years ago.

Mrs. Owen was a devoted member of the Central Presbyterian church of this city. She was a consistent and earnest Christian woman devoted to her home and family. She was also an active member of the Rebekah lodge. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Harry Schoch and one son, Robert E. Owens, both of whom reside near here and two sisters in the east, Mrs. Sarah A. Thomas of Fredericksburg, Va., and Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas of LeRayesville, Penna. Three grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive. One child with the husband preceded her in death. The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, May 9th, at the Central Presbyterian church at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. T. M. Balcoff. Interment in Columbus City cemetery.
