Samuel H. Duncan, a prominent and highly esteemed resident of Louisa county died Saturday morning in a hospital at Davenport where he had been taken for an operation in the hope that it would prolong his life. The remains were brought to this city Saturday afternoon and taken to the family home near Cotter. Samuel H. Duncan was born in Tennessee, October 28, 1838 and died December 14, 1912. He came to Iowa at the age of five and settled with his parents on a farm in this county. A number of years ago he had the misfortune to go absolutely deaf but this affliction did not non plus him and his success was greater than that of men with far less handicaps.

On the 5th of November 1863 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Edwards and to them were born nine children, two of whom preceded him in death, one in infancy and the other, Clyde, who died at the age of 17 years. He is survived by his aged wife and one daughter, Mrs. Grace Adelia Nellis of Aberdeen, S. D. and six sons; Jackson K., Cotter; Charles, Robert L. and Oscar E. all prominent farmers of the home neighborhood and Guy and Garry, twins, at home. He is survived by one brother, Robert F. Duncan and one sister, Mrs. John Oats, both of this city. Mr. Duncan was a consistent member of the Reformed church in religious matters he took an active and interested part. The funeral services were held at the home Monday morning t 11 o'clock conducted by Rev. C. E. Ewing of Conesville. Interment was made in the family plot in the Columbus City cemetery.
