The funeral of Lewis E. Swank took place from the Reformed church at Conesville at 2 o'clock Friday. Services were conducted by Elder O. Bennett of Wapello, an old friend of the deceased. Lewis E. Swank, the eldest son of Joseph and Mary Swank departed this life, Wednesday, October 16, 1812. Deceased was born, Sept. 12, 1832 and at the time of his death was 80 years, 1 month and 4 days old. He was taken to the hospital at Muscatine some time ago with the hope of being benefited but continued to grow worse until he quietly passed away.

He has been a member of the Church of Christ for more than twenty-five years. He was also a soldier in the war of 1865, enlisting in the 2nd Iowa Cavalry, Co. A in 1862. He was married to Caroline M. Allen, August 12, 1863. To this union were born three children, Mrs. Delia Bebb of Cone, Mrs. Julia Hines of Muscatine and Joseph, who died at the age of four years. Four sisters and two brothers have preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his loss three brothers and two sisters namely, Francis J., and Charley A., of Muscatine; George W., of Wapello; Sarah E. and Mrs. Anna VanHorn, of LeGrand. He has lived for years on his farm southwest of cone and since the death of his wife, which took place July 23, 1895 he has been bother father and mother to his children. For the last nine years he has made his home with his daughter Mrs. Delia Bebb and family.
