Wolford Chown, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Wolford was born January 7, 1872, in Oakland township and grew to womanhood in the same neighborhood. She was married to C. R. Chown, December 24, 1892, going to housekeeping on a farm in Port Allen where they have resided ever since. Mrs. Chown was a girl and woman of many good qualities and her personality was always of a cheerful disposition. She was the mother of 12 children, 7 girls and 5 boys, one boy, Alvin and three girls, Opal, Lela and Ruth, having preceded her to the better world. Mrs. Chown's sickness has been of long duration. She has been ailing for the past two years and most of that time while not under a doctor's care. Her last illness was after she gave birth to a sweet little baby girl, Aug. 31, 1912. While the mother recovered from the birth and was able to be up and out doors, other complications retained hold on her and Thursday evening, October 17, she was taken to the Bellevue hospital at Muscatine where an operation for gall stones was performed.

She rallied from this operation but grew weaker and on Sunday morning at one o'clock her spirit took its flight and went home to the God who gave it. She leaves her aged father and mother, two sisters and three brothers, besides her heart broken husband and eight children, seven of whom are under the parental roof. Mrs. Myrtle Misel of DeWitt, Ernest, Russell, Verl, Elma, Nita, Lester and Mildred, the little babe of seven weeks. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon in the Reformed church in Conesville of which she was a member from young girlhood, conducted by Rev. J. W. Bechtel of Fairview, Kan., assisted by Rev. C. W. Ewing of Cone. After the last sad rites her remains were followed by a large concourse of relatives and friends to the beautiful Conesville cemetery and laid beside her four little babes who had preceded her to the better world.
