Mrs. Jane Thornton died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jas. Singleton, near Conesville Thursday, June 27, at about 5 o'clock p. m. She had been in failing health for months, but about three weeks ago she came to Columbus Junction to visit friends. Here she became gravely ill. Mrs. Singleton came at once and a week before her death she was much better as to be able to be taken to the home of her daughter. Her granddaughter, Mrs. Nellie Forbes came from Salt Lake City, to assist in caring for her.

Mrs. Thornton was born in Rose County, Ohio, July 25, 1817 and lacked less than a month of reaching her ninetieth birthday. She married John Thornton in 1837 and came with him to Iowa in 1839 and settled on a farm in Muscatine county. To them were born nine children and is here Mr. Thornton died, leaving her to care for and bring up seven children, two having preceded the father. Only three of the nine children survive her, Mrs. Studdard, of Salt Lake City, Mrs. McCurdy of Fairbury, Nebraska and Mrs. Singleton, near Conesville. Besides theses she had thirteen grandchildren. For many years she was a resident of Columbus Junction and here was a member of the Evangelical church and later of the Reformed church. Her funeral was held from the Reformed church here, conducted by Rev. Bechtel of Cone on Saturday at 11 o'clock; she was laid to rest in the cemetery at Columbus City.
