Mr. M. D. Rifenberg's death which occurred Wednesday a short while before noon, was not unexpected, as he had been hopelessly ill for some weeks. His death removes from us one of Columbus Junction's earliest and most respected citizens. He was born in New York March 8, 1847. He came to Iowa in 1869; a year or so subsequently to Columbus Junction which continued his home. His first wife was Mary Klotz, she died many years ago. His second wife, whom he married in New York, survives him as does his aged mother. He leaves no children.

Mr. Rifenberg was prominent in the Masonic order and was an Odd Fellow. Politically, he was a democrat, but was elected member of the town council and mayor of the town frequently, not withstanding his politics. He has been engaged in various lines of business; principally as a dry goods man. For the past few years he had been a commercial salesman for a Minneapolis house, but ill health compelled him to leave the road some months since. The funeral will take place tomorrow, Friday, afternoon. interment in Columbus City cemetery.
