Mr. James Hall Hicklin was born in Illinois, Edgar county, in October, 1826, hence had passed beyond the eightieth milestone, in 1840, at the age of fourteen years, he came with the Rev. Dan Ellige, his brother-in-law, to Iowa and made his home with his sister for some years, though he worked away from home during most of the summer months. He drove about the first regular breaking team of five or six yokes of oxen in the county, for Jonathan Dix. On March 4, 1849, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Williams, a daughter of Robert Williams, the first settler in Wapello township. This was over fifty-eight years ago. The wife, three sons and three daughters survive. The daughters are Mary Brimmer, Martha Archibald and Amanda Gallegher. All these live in this vicinity and all minister to their father's wants to the end.

Mr. Hicklin was the last survivor of the Mexican war who lived in Louisa county. Another, Hon. B. Garrett, died at this place a few years since. Mr. Hicklin was a member of Co. K. U. S. Mounted Rifles. His regiment was in nearly all of Scott's battles. He was also a member of Co. G. 19th Iowa infantry in the civil war. He was in the hard fought battle of Prairie Grove. His entire time of service was west of the Mississippi. Mr. Hicklin had been mayor of Wapello and we think, justice of the peace. Funeral services were held at the home in Wapello Monday afternoon, conducted by the G. A. R. post of that place, which he was a member. Rev. Newsome of the Methodist church preached the funeral sermon. The remains were laid to rest in the Wapello cemetery.
