Mrs. Bates dead.

Margaret Tindall was born in Clark county, Ohio, in March, 1822. In 1844 she was united in marriage to Joseph Bates. In 1850 they came to Iowa, settling on the farm two miles southeast of Cairo, which remained in her possession at the time of her death. Her husband died in July, 1906. A few years later she moved to Wapello which continued to be her home until death. To Mr. and Mrs. Bates eleven children were born, six sons and five daughters. The sons are Charles, Howard, James, Joseph, Curtis and Robert. Robert lives in New Windsor, Colorado; the others are all living in Louisa county. Of the five daughters all are living but one, Mrs. Alice Smith, who died twelve years ago. The others are Mrs. J. A. Leamon, of Wapello; Mrs. Leslie Nicholls, of Marshall, Mrs. W. J. Paris, of Port Louisa and Mrs. J. H. Baldridge, of La Junta, Colorado.

We knew little of Mrs. Bates except through her children, Joseph, Charles, Susan, Alice and Laura. Our acquaintance with these was of a close personal nature and we know they had a good mother. Since coming to Wapello, her home was alone, in one sense of the word, but some of her loved ones were nearly always with her. Her son, Charles, lived near her and was always within call. She made eh last visit to the old homestead about Christmas, when she took dinner with her son, Joseph, who lives there. She visited a few days with her children around old Oakland and came home the following Thursday.

She shortly afterwards was taken down with bronchitis. Her extreme age was against her and death was the result. During her last sickness, she had the constant and loving care of her children. Mrs. Bates was a Christian woman in the fullest sense of the term. When in Ohio she united with the Methodist church. On coming to Iowa, she transferred her membership to the Presbyterian church at Oakland, near her home and lived and died a consistent member of that organization. The funeral services were held Saturday, February 9. Short services at 10 a. m. at the home. The regular services were conducted by Rev. Mackay, of Morning Sun, at the Oakland church. Interment followed in the cemetery near by.
