Leiltia Smiley Bent was born October 29, 1820, in Minishink, Orange county, New York, of Scotch-Irish parentage. She died in Columbus City, November 19, 1906. She had been failing in strength for a number on months and had suffered greatly during the last weeks. She was a woman of great strength of character and of a strong and active mind. She became a teacher at the age of fourteen and taught continually until her marriage at the age of twenty, to C. D. Bent, of Stirling, New York. When they came west in 1857 they settled near Iowa city that they might have the double advantage of church and schools. Mrs. Bent became a member of the church which is now known as the United Presbyterian early in her married life and has ever been an earnest and interested member. Her husband, two daughters, twelve grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren survive her. She was buried from her home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, services conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. G. Marshall. She was laid to rest in the Columbus City cemetery.
