John M. Herrick was born in Watertown, N. Y., July 16, 1819. He died at the home of his youngest daughter, Mrs. Carrie Hoag, in Wapello Thursday, March 31, 1904. He lacked only two and a half months of being eighty-five years of age.

John Herrick came of a family of American patriots. His grandfather was a soldier in the American revolution; his father took part in the battle of Sackett's Harbor, in the war of 1812. His ancestors on his father's side were of English descent, but his mother, who was a Van Schaick, was descended from a Holland family. In 1836 he moved with his father's family to Ohio, coming to Iowa and settling on a farm adjoining Wapello in 1848. This continued to be his home until death. D. W. Herrick, a brother, came to Iowa with him, while the oldest brother, Henry, came about 1857. Their sister, Huldah Jamison, wife of the late George Jamison, came as early as 1840. She is now the sole survivor of her father's family.

John M. Herrick was married in 1847 to Emeline Sexton. To them six children were born, two of whom, Maurice and Brigham, died in infancy. Of the other four all except the oldest daughter; Mrs. Emma Rice of New York, were present at the last sad rites of the father. The others are J. W. of Sioux City, William C. and Mrs. Carrie Hoag of Wapello. Mr. Herrick was a democrat of the most uncompromising kind. He believed in the principles of democracy and no allurements could ever tempt him to betray it or any of its candidates. He was buried under the auspices of the I. O. O. F of which he had been a member for a great many years. He was laid to rest Saturday, April 2, in the cemetery at Bethel, five miles directly south of Wapello. John Herrick was an upright man in all his dealings, kind to all and void of malice.
