The death of Mrs. Mary Wright Carr, which occurred at the hospital in Burlington on Saturday, January 30, 1904, was so sudden and unexpected that is is hard to realize that she is gone. Mary Wright was the only daughter of John R. and Rebecca Wright. She was born in their home near Morning Sun September 8, 1857, and was something over forty-six years of age at the time of her death.

She was a bright girl and early adopted the profession of teaching to which she was eminently successful. She has been engaged in that work, in this state and in Nebraska for twenty five years; the last ten years of that time in the primary room at this place. On June 8, 1886, at Grand Island, Nebraska, she was united in marriage to John Jay Carr who, with one daughter, Hallie, ten years of age, survive her. Besides these she leaves an aged mother and three brothers, besides a host of friends to mourn her sudden departure. The brothers are C. M. Wright, Wapello; Herbert of Clarence, Missouri and Warren of Colfax.

Mrs. Carr's health had not been rugged all winter, but she continued her school work until Monday evening of last week, when she was compelled to give up and remain in her room. On Friday evening, January 29, she was taken to the hospital at Burlington to undergo a surgical operation as the only hope of saving her life. She was found to be beyond reach of surgical skill and never rallied from the operation. Her death resulted as stated above. The remains were brought to her old home at Morning Sun and the funeral was held from the Presbyterian church Monday afternoon, February 1, conducted by her pastor, Rev. John R. Vance of Columbus Junction. She was laid to rest in Elmwood cemetery in Morning Sun, beside friends who had gone before.
