Orono, January 18- The venerable Thos. Newton died at his home just over in Pike township, early in the morning, January 12, 1904. He was born in Wayne county, Indiana, in 1820. He was married to Miss Viola Epperly in 1846. She departed this life in 1891, having been a great sufferer for a long while. Mr. Newton is survived by five sons and one daughter. Funeral services were held from the late home Thursday morning and the remains interred in the Watkins cemetery besides those of his wife. The pall bearers were his sons and his nephew, John Newton of Cedar Rapids.

Mr. Newton was one of the pioneers and he and the late Richard Lord and their families lived for a time in a little log cabin near the present family residence. There were generous men and women in pioneer days. Two sons and the daughter remained with their father at the old home and will be very lonely with out him. His son Jeptha came from Atkinson, Nebraska, and was at the death bed and funeral of his father.
