Elizabeth Shearer passes away.

Elizabeth Evans was born at York, Pennsylvania, October 11, 1834. May 21, 1852, she was married to S. H. Shearer. They came to Iowa in 1857, after residing a year or so in Mansfield, Ohio. Both husband and wife were members of the members of the Lutheran church in Pennsylvania. There being no church of that denomination at Columbus City, to which place they came, and which was their home for many years, they deposited their church letter with the Congregational church and worshiped with that society until the organization of the German Reformed church there a few years later, in the early 60's, which they assisted in organizing. Mrs. Shearer was the last survivor of the original members.

Very soon after the founding of Columbus Junction, they began business here and this continued to be their home until the death of each. To them were born eleven children, eight sons and three daughters. Of these two sons and two daughters died in infancy. The other daughter, Alma J., was married to Rev. J. H. Allbright, then and yet, an active minister in the Reformed church. He now lives at Ada, Ohio, their only son, Cecil, being a student at Tiffin, the same state. Her death occur at Colon, Mich., August 31, 1889.

All the living sons attended their mother's funeral. These are Martin P., the oldest of Abeline, Kans.; J. A., Jennings, Kansas; Sylvester, Abilene, Kansas; A. W., of Winfield; G. E., of Wapello, and Clarence, of Burlington.

Besides her boys, she leaves two brothers, Joseph Evans of Allerton, Iowa and Isaac of York, Penns. The sister, Mrs. Sarah Bendar, also resides at York.

Mrs. Shearer was a church member from her earliest girlhood, and a true noble, christian woman, a most lovable character in every relation of life. The remains were brought from Winfield Tuesday morning, after a short service at the home of her son, and were taken to her old home. The funeral was held at the Reformed church at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. C. K. Staudt, interment was in Columbus City.
