Letts, July 1 -John Ephraim and David Shellabarger attended the funeral of their sister, Mrs. Jean, at Cone last Saturday. Other relatives from town and vicinity attended. Mrs. Jean died in West Liberty last Thursday, June 26, 1902, interment in the Cone cemetery.

The ranks of the old settlers have again been broken and we mourn the departure of Mrs. Melissa Shellabarger-Jean. She was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, May 12, 1830. In 1847 she was united in marriage to Jacob Jean, who passed away several years ago. To them, six children were born, all of whom survive their parents except the oldest, Thomas. Mr. and Mrs. Jean lived in Orono township for about fifty years. They lived on a farm near cone, till 1889 when they moved to the village and resided there until the death of Mr. Jean.

Mrs. Jean, after his death spent sometime with the daughters, Mrs. Lane and Mrs. D. E. Long, in California, but lately she has resided with her daughter, Mrs. Protzman, at West Liberty and there she passed to her reward on June 26, 1902, aged seventy-two years, one month and fourteen days.

She was a very energetic woman, a faithful wife, a loving mother and kind friends. She was a devout member of the Methodist Episcopal church for many years and always manifested a deep interest in the welfare of her denomination and although she was loyal to her own, she often worshiped with sister denominations. She was a faithful Sunday school worker and served as superintendent of the same at this place. We remember with tender thankfulness her kind visits to us when we were prostrated by sickness. The funeral services were held from the M. E. church Saturday, June 28. The pastor, Rev. Millice, preached a comforting and helpful sermon. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot in the village burying ground where repose those of her husband and son, Thomas.
