The following is badly damaged.

On Thursday, December 19 at the Methodist church occurred the funeral of J. E. Carpenter. The interment followed at the Columbus City cemetery where the mortal of Elmore Carpenter rest beside his parents. Mr. Carpenter's death came suddenly in a collision on the Milwaukee road at Potter, west of Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, December 17, 1901. He was engaged in his duties as postal clerk at the time of the crash. James Elmore Carpenter was the son of the late Milton Carpenter of Oakland township, where he was born March 23, 1863. Of his own immediate family, he leaves two brothers, Alfred A, of Mt Pleasant and Charles O., of Chicago. Also their half sisters, Mrs. Adelaide Hesser, of Colorado Springs; Mrs. Ida Richardson and Mrs. Effie Morgan, of Kansas.
