Our community was shocked Monday to learn of the very sudden death of Mrs. Spurgeon at her home in Union township. Catherine Spurgeon was born December 12, 1829. She was the daughter of Patrick and Hannah Colton, of Jersey City, New Jersey. She came with her parents to Iowa in 1842. On March 11, 1862, she was married to S. N. Spurgeon of this county. With her husband she made this her home until death. Mr. and Mrs. Spurgeon never had children of their own or by adoption; as a consequence Mr. Spurgeon finds his loss doubly severe.

Mrs. Spureon was a most excellent woman in all relations of life. All who knew her comprised her list of friends; she had no enemies. Besides her husband she leaves five brothers; Ed Colton of Wapello, Frank of Columbus City and Thomas, John and James of Union township and two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Gamble of Columbus City and Mrs. Edwards of Union to mourn her loss.
