Mrs. Sarah Hughes, the beloved wife of Rev. Richard Hughes, Welsh neighbor, died after a brief illness Tuesday, September 7, 1897. She was stricken down the previous Friday with congestive chills. The exhaustion that followed proved too much for her strength. She passed away quietly, surrounded by her family- her beloved husband and all her children who survive her except Eben, her youngest son, who could not possibly come, and her daughter Anne, who failed to arrive in time. The funeral took place on Thursday. A brief service was conducted at the house at 9:30 a. m. by Rev. W. E. Evans of Williamsburgh, Iowa and Rev. Lloyd Williams. Service was held in the Welsh church- Bethel- at 10 a. m., led by Rev. W. Roland Williams, her son-in-law of Pawnee City, Nebraska. Mr. Williams opened the service by reading selections from the last chapter on Proverbs which almost literally depicted the active life of Mother Hughes. After prayer, a hymn and brief remarks which brought out the prominent traits in his mother's life and character, he called upon the ministers present to speak words of comfort and inspiration on the occasion. Rev. Lloyd Williams and Rev. W. D. Evans spoke in the Welsh language and Rev. H. R. stark of Washington, Iowa in English and Rev. Cooper of Columbus Junction closed with prayer. It was a helpful, sacred, spiritual service. The remains were viewed at the house but not at the church. She was buried in the Welsh cemetery.

Mrs. Hughes was the daughter of William and Mary Rees, Llandybie, S Wales. She was born February 21, 1822, married May 21, 1847, to Rev. R. Hughes. they emigrated to this country in 1870, settling first at Ottawa, Minnesota, then at Long creek, Iowa, where they have made their home now for over twenty-three years. Last May they celebrated their golden wedding. To her children she was a mother. The influence of her life and character lives in them. She had nine children. Her son John was killed by an accident two years ago. There survive her three sons, William H., David R., and Eben and five daughters; Mrs. Mary Jones of Ottawa, Minnesota, Mrs. Anne Jones, Peterson, Iowa, Mrs Rachel Williams, Pawnee City, Nebraska, Mrs. S. H. Abbott, Perry, Iowa and Miss Lizzie Hughes of this community. The sympathy of all go out to the bereaved family; especially to Father Hughes, a venerable old gentleman, who has been deprived of his eyesight for the last five years and who is now deprived of his beloved wife.
