George Blaze, aged 21 years and nine months was killed July 21, 1897, by being thrown from a horse in some unknown way while returning from Louie Girrard's with a scoop shovel, which he had been sent for. It was evident he had lived for some time after he was hurt for he had crawled through a wire fence and about 50 years across an adjoining field where he was found with his face lying down on his arm and his hat placed so as to shade him from the hot sun, dead. In this sudden and unexpected death our entire community is shocked and our hearts filled with sorrow for George was loved by all who knew him. He leaves a father in Wapello and two sisters, one in Kansas and the other near Davenport. He was staying at the home of his cousin, Fred Barkoff, at the time of his death. Services were held by Rev. Zimmerman at the Wapello cemetery.
