Henry Bier was born December 13, 1812 in Chester county, Pennsylvania. He died January 23 near Newport, Iowa. This would make his age something over 84 years. In 1832 he was converted and joined the M. E. church. He retained his connection with that church until 1855 when he united with the M. P. church of which he continued a member until his death.

He was twice married; in 1833 to Elizabeth McCormic; who died in 1865. In 1875 he married Mrs. Lucinda Early, who died four years ago. In 1833 he came to Champaign county, Illinois whence, in the autumn of 1842 he moved to Louisa county, Iowa, which continued his home until the end came. Father Bier was a devoted follower of Christ for sixty-five years. He was faithful to his convictions of duty in every respect and ready to go at the Master's call. On Monday, January 25, his funeral was preached at the Fairview church to a large concourse of friends and relatives by the Rev. R. G. Taugue.
