On Tuesday, August 4, Mrs. Rachel Fulton, the genial hostess of Columbus City departed from this life. With brother and sister she was visiting in California. She had fairly rallied from the effects of the trip, when exhaustion of vital power set in, terminating in a peaceful and happy release. She had always been hale and hearty, but had been declining in the past few months. The remains, accompanied by her brother, arrived here early Monday morning, being upon the road five days. They were, however, well preserved. The funeral occurred on Monday at 3 p. m., Rev. A. B. Cooper officiating. The G. A. R. was there to bear witness to her patriotism. Her church session was there to testify to her christian character and loyalty. She was laid away in her last resting place in the Columbus City cemetery. Mrs. Fulton was born in Pennsylvania, May 2, 1813. She was the mother of nine children-seven daughters and two sons. Two daughter and one son preceded her, the rest remain to mourn her departure. Mr. Fulton died in 1877. During the Civil War her love for country led her forth with her husband into the thick of the fight, where with loving hands she ministered to the wounded and dying. At fifty-three, in company with her husband, she opened the Fulton house and for thirty years her genial soul has welcomed the traveler and friend to her house and board.
