Mr. Otto Werner, an esteemed citizen of Marshall township, died suddenly Wednesday morning, aged 40 years and 3 months. He arose in the early morning, breakfasted and worshiped with his family, apparently in the best of health. After breakfast he went to the Frank Whistler barn, to assist in putting up hay. While at work in the barn loft and in the act of using his pitch fork he fell upon the hay, where he died without a struggle. Medical aid was hastily summoned but death had carried his victim far beyond the reach of recovery, and the sad intelligence was borne to the happy wife and children, who were unable for some time to fully comprehend the awful truth. Mr. Werner was born in Hess Darmstradt, Germany, April 15, 1856 and died July 15, 1896. He emigrated to America in 1872 at the age of 16. In 1884 he was united in marriage to Miss Mace Slage, and resided with his family in Woodford county, Illinois, until Feb. 1, 1895, when he located on the Sloan farm in Marshall township. The grief stricken family consisted of a wife and four small children, two boys and two girls, have received the kind attention of a thoughtful and sympathetic community and a large concourses of neighbors and friends attended the funeral services at Prairie Chapel church Thursday afternoon. Mr. Werner was a good neighbor, honest and industrious and an earnest Christian. On the evening of March 6, he united with the above named church and continued the above named church and continued to perform his Christian duties with ever increasing devotion until the time of his death. His Christian course was short but triumphant.
