The subject of this sketch, W. H. Vernon was born in Virginia, July 7, 1816. Died at his home in Mt. Union, June 22, 1895, being 78 years, 11 months, 15 days. Mr. Vernon has only lived here a short time, since the last of April, but had made many friends, but being feeble could not get around as much as he wished. Mr. Vernon learned the blacksmith trade in Washington, D. C. after which he came to Burlington, Iowa, where he was united in marriage to Eliza McKray, March 13, 1845. They lived in Burlington 10 years then moved to Morning Sun where they lived 10 years, after that they lived in Cairo 28 years. Thirteen children blessed this union, 10 sons and three daughters, eight are left to mourn the loss of a dear father while five are welcoming him on the other shore. Although the dark angel of death has visited this home we home the thought of the meeting in the bright beyond and greeting the loved ones gone before will help them to bear their sorrow now. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Jones of Columbus City at the Baptist church and the body was laid to rest in the Fulton cemetery.
