A. L. Duncan was born in Blount county, Tennessee, April 19, 1842. He died at Anamosa, Iowa, May 2, 1895. He was only a few days over fifty three years old at the time of his death. He came to Iowa with his parents when a year and a half old, and this continued his home through life. He enlisted early in the war and belonged to the famous Crocker Brigade of Iowans, being a member of company C, 11th Iowa infantry. He continued in the service four years, receiving a server wound before Atlanta, July 21, 1874.

On August 6, 1868, he was married to Miss Martha O'Laughling. To them were born eight children five of whom survive the parents. These are the three boys, J. E. and I. W., of this place and G. B., of Kansas, and the two daughters, Rilla of Ananmosa and Villa of Washington, Iowa. The first wife died June 16, 1881. March 19, 1887 he was married to Miss Sadie Maxson, who survives him.

The funeral took place from the Methodist church of this place. The services were conducted by Rev. D. H. Fouse, assisted by the Rev. M. J. Pusey. The interment was conducted by Joe Neal post, G. A. R. of Columbus city, of which the deceased was a member. All his children were present at the last sad rites, as were all his brothers and sisters, except one brother in Texas. He was a member of the Reformed church, having united with that society when he was a young man. Those of his father's family who were present were Mrs. Joe Wear of Barnard, Kansas and Mrs. A. H. Parsons, Mrs. E. A. Ogler and the three brothers, Joe C., James R., and Sam, A., of this vicinity. These all have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
