Columbus Gazette, Columbus Junction, Iowa Thursday, May 18, 1893 page 1

A Very Sad accident occurred at the home of Mr. Albert Davis in the Welsh neighborhood last week, by which their littie adopted daughter, Fannie lost her life. Mrs. Davis set a kettle of boiling water down on the porch and back in the kitchen to put the lid on the stove. She was only away from it for the shortest possible time, yet long enough for the little one who was playing in the yard, to come on the porch and by some means she stumbled and sat down in the kettle of water. Mrs. Davis was right at hand and lifted her up in an instant, stripped of her clothing and did all she could to relieve her. Medical aid was summoned at once and everything possible was done to save her life but all was of no avail and after eighteen hours she passed away. Her sufferings were not as severe as might have been expected and she was conscious or partially so almost to the moment of her death. The accident occurred on Wednesday evening and Thursday at noon her spirit took its flight. She was a little orphan girl that Mr. and Mrs. Davis received from the Davenport association two years ago, when she was only five weeks old. She was a sweet little babe and they had given her as much affection as if she had been their own, and had lavished upon her the tenderest care. Her age was two years, one month and fifteen days. The occurrence case a gloom over the entire community and Mr. and Mrs. Davis have the heartfelt sympathy of all in this sad affliction. The funeral took place on Friday from the Welsh church, and was largely attended. Rev. Johns conducted the funeral services, assisted by Revs. Evans and Williams.
