Columbus Gazette, Columbus Junction, Iowa Thursday, March 16, 1893 page 1

Harriet Fletcher Syphrit was born in Pile county, Ohio, September 18, 1835, and died near Fairview church, Louisa county, Iowa, March 8, 1893, aged 57 years, 5 months and 20 days. While quite young, she moved with her parents, Joseph and Mary McNatton to Davis county, Missouri, where they remained seven years. Then they emigrated to Polk county, Iowa; here they remained a few years, removing to Louisa county, Iowa, in 1851. She was married April 8, 1855, to Joseph B. Syphrit in Grandview, by Rev. McGrew. to them were born four boys and four girls; seven of whom reached man and womanhood; on girl dying at the age of 2 years and 8 months. Since the time of their marriage they have resided in Louisa county; the greater part of the time in Grandview township, about five years in Port Louisa, and seven in Wapello township where she breathed her last. About the year 1857, she became convinced that it was her duty to become a follower of Jesus, at which time she gave her heart to God in the old M. E. church in Grandview and received the pardon of her sins through the atoning blood of Christ, after which she walked the life of a devoted Christian until it was said; " It is enough; com up higher." She was a devoted wife and mother and never had a known enemy. In the early part of the winter she received a fall which gave her much pain and reduced her strength so much that when that dread destroyer, lung fever, got possession of her body, she was too weak to battle with it. She gave strong evidence that she was ready and prepared to go and be with Him who saved her from her sins. The bereaved family fell they have sustained a great loss for which they mourn, but not as those who have no hope. All the children except one, have chosen that good part that can not be taken away and, by the grace of Him who doeth all things well, are endeavoring to meet their mother and clasp hands with her on the banks of the beautiful river where parting and mourning are never known.
