James Madison Vandevort was born in Ross county, Ohio, May 22, 1816 and died at Grandview, Iowa, January18, 1893, making his age at the time of his death 76 years, 7 months and 27 days. He removed with his parents to Pike county, Ohio, when three years of age. Here, February 2, 1838, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Dunahoo. To this couple were born nine children, seven of whom, with their mother remain to mourn his loss. The surviving children are John, the eldest son, living in Nebraska; Charles, the other son, a resident of Burlington; Mrs. Elizabeth J. Riley, of this place; Mrs. Marietta Guthrie, of Grandview; Mrs Christina Smith, of Wapello; Mrs. Eva Gipple, of Grandview, and Mrs. Ell? Thompson, of Grandview township. At the age of sixteen he united with the Methodist church, of which he remained an active, consistent member to death. The funeral services occurred at the Methodist church, Grandview, Friday, January 20, conducted by Rev. Potter, assisted by the Rev. Schrader.
