Columbus Gazette, Columbus Junction, Iowa, Thursday January 10th, 1889 page 1

Columbus City. - Jan. 7 - The funeral of Col. Garner on Thursday was largely attended by representatives from all parts of the country. The Colonel's sister, Mrs. Taylor, of Ottumwa, was here to pay her last respects to a departed brother, and left for her home on Friday. Mrs. W. Garvin, nee Franklin, of Mt. Pleasant, was also in attendance at the funeral. Mrs. James, the Colonel's youngest daughter, now of California, who has been here staying with her parents and friends since some time in September, after seeing her aged father quietly laid away in the house appointed for all living, left for her home of Friday accompanied by her sister, Miss J. W. Garner as far as Davenport. Mrs. James daughter, Miss Maggie, who has been staying with her friends here for some time, still remains with her Grandmother for the present. Thus one more of the old and early settlers of the county has gone to join the large company that has gone before. But few more are left that are older and earlier than he, and, who will be the next to go?
