Mrs. Fannie Jones departed this life, at her home in Columbus Junction, Tuesday morning, April 10, 1888. She was the second daughter of Rev. and Mrs. J. E. Jones, and was born at Lansford, Carbon county, Pennsylvania, December 3, 1861. At an early age she removed with her parents to Cleveland, Ohio, and lived there and at other places in the state, for twelve years, when the family returned until the spring of 1882 when they came to Iowa. Fannie united with the church at the age of 13 and was a devoted Christian until her death. She received her education in Cinninnati, Ohio and at the State Normal School at Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. She began teaching at the age of 17, taught three years of 10 months each, before leaving Pennsylvania, besides select school during one vacation, not taking a week's vacation in twelve months. After coming to Iowa, she taught in the Welsh neighborhood, at Yankeetown and Columbus City, before coming to Columbus Junction. She took charge of the Grammar department her in the fall of 1885, and was here as elsewhere a most earnest and successful teacher, but the strain was too great and her health gave way and from this she never fully recovered. she was married March 15, 1887 to Edward E. Jones of Columbus Junction, and immediately went to housekeeping here. Her baby was born March 12, 1888, and for a week all seemed to go well, and then fever set in, and for three weeks longer she suffered ere the end come. Her death was a very happy one. Shortly before she died she bid her friends farewell, and after closing her eyes for a little while, she opened them exclaiming, joy! joy!,joy! What sweet music is ringing in my care! Then she sang in a clear sweet voice; "O! that will be joyful, etc. keeping time with her hand. She seemed to have had a beautiful vision, said she saw her little brother looking so natural, and her aunt, both of whom died years ago, and she spoke of seeing the Savior, and she longed to go. Death had no terror for her. She was buried at the Welsh neighborhood Thursday. There was a short service at the residence, after which the baby was baptized, by Rev. Eggert, standing besides the mother's coffin. She was christened Lulu Frances, by her mother's desire. This was a most impressive ceremony. The schools were dismissed and attended the funeral in a body, as did the Chautauquan Circle ow which she was an honored member; The funeral service at the Presbyterian church was conducted by Rev. Hughes of Grinnell assisted by Revs. Evans, Iowa City, Eggert and Schwimley of Columbus Junction, Hughes of Clifton and Davis of Williamsburgh, IA. Many floral tributes were sent and a large concourse of friends and neighbors attended the funeral. Fannie Jones was a lovely woman in every relation of life and the family have the sympathy of all who know them.
