Luella M. Slight (1924-2020)

Luella M. Slight, 96, of Washington, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2020 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at the Snyder and Hollenbaugh Funeral and Cremation Services of Columbus Junction. Burial will be in the Columbus City Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the United Presbyterian Home for lights on the tree at Christmas time. Luella Marie Semlow was born on January 15, 1924 in Grundy Center, the daughter of Louie J. and Annie (Eilers) Semlow. She attended country school at Lincoln Center and graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1942. Luella worked at the Rath Packing Company in Waterloo where she met her husband Rodney E. Slight. They were married on November 28, 1946 in Grundy Center. Luella then worked at Black’s Department Store in the billing department. She and Rodney moved to Amarillo, Texas in 1954 and back to Cedar Falls in 1957 before moving to Columbus Junction in 1960. There Luella worked at the Economart grocery store and the Junior High and Senior High school libraries for a number of years. In 1995 they moved to the U.P. Home in Washington where she was a volunteer. Luella was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and she enjoyed music, reading, watching sports, working jigsaw puzzles and fishing.

Luella will be deeply missed by her son, Gary and his wife, Ardyth of Muscatine; two granddaughters, Sarah (Danny Sama) Slight of Chicago, Illinois and Meagan (Britt) Jameson of Muscatine; six great grandchildren; Sister-in-law, Rose Semlow of Tucson, Arizona.

Luella was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rodney in 1998; son, Craig in 2008 and brother, Luvern Semlow.
